Scenes of flooding in the north of England and shoppers scrambling
for post-Christmas bargains were the most-watched television on Boxing
Day, as BBC News at Ten topped the TV ratings.
It attracted 6.2 million viewers as BBC1 swept the board of the top 10 most watched shows.
New second world war drama And Then There Were None came in second with 6 million viewers at 9pm, followed closely by 5.7 million watching the revelation that Arthur “Fatboy” Chubb had been murdered in a case of mistaken identity in EastEnders at 7.30pm.
The Christmas Day episode of EastEnders, which went head-to-head with ITV’s Downton Abbey, was also watched by 5.7 million people.
Other new series also proved popular as Still Open All Hours attracted 5.1 million viewers and Dickensian did well during its first and second episodes, with 5 million tuning in at 7pm and 4.3 million at 8.30pm.
A family-friendly lineup also saw BBC1 proving popular during the day, with 4.8 million households watching Shaun the Sheep: The Farmer’s Llamas at 6.10pm.
The National Lottery Live at 10.20pm also made the top 10, with 3.9 million viewers.
ITV did well in the Christmas Day ratings, with the finale of Downton Abbey watched by 6.6 million viewers, but no ITV shows made the Boxing Day top 10. The highest rating ITV show was Surprise Surprise, with 2.7 million viewers at 7pm.
Other BBC shows that proved popular were the animated film The Croods, with 3.5 million people watching at 4.45pm, and Match of the Day – with 3.4 million at 10.30pm.
