CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu forest minister MSM Anandan on Tuesday distributed cash prize of Rs 1,000 each and certificates to 18 forest staff at Vedanthangal bird sanctuary.
The cash and certificates were given in recognition of the forest staff, who on a war footing plugged a few breaches in the Vedanthangal tank during the recent rain. The timely effort helped avert a major mishap and hence the cash prize and certificate, said an official release.
Vedanthangal at present has nearly 20,000 birds. This included open-billed storks, grey herons, white ibises and darters or snake birds. A few thousand more birds will land in the sanctuary by the end of this month.
During this season, more than three lakh visitors are expected to visit Vedanthangal. The sanctuary attracted tourists not only within the country but also those from abroad.
