New Delhi: The number of print media publications increased 5.8% in India in the year to 31 March, overcoming the challenge of social media and 24x7 television news, according to data released on Tuesday.
With 105,443 registered publications as of 31 March 2015, there was an increase of 5,783 publications from March 2014, when the number stood at 99,660.
The data was part of the 59th annual report on the print media, Press In India 2014-15, prepared by the Registrar of Newspapers of India (RNI). It was unveiled by Arun Jaitley, Union minister of finance, corporate affairs and information and broadcasting.
Jaitley said the reason India is bucking the global trend of online news taking over the written word is the country’s vibrant combination of national and regional media.
“I think it’s time print strikes back,” he said. “Print is a trend here to stay. It’s an advantage for media owners, for the entire country and for democracy itself.”
The report was compiled from the annual statements submitted to the RNI by registered publications, including newspapers and periodicals, as required under the Press and Registration of Books Act, 1867. It took into account information provided by publishers between 1 April 2014 and 31 March 2015. No verification is required for information provided by publications with a circulation of less than 75,000.
This year, RNI received annual statements from 23,394 registered publishers, against 19,660 in 2013-14, marking an increase of 18.99%, but making up only 22.19% of the total publications.
“We’re proposing amendments that initiate the de-registration of a publication in case it fails to submit its annual statement for three consecutive years,” said S.M Khan, press registrar, RNI.
Khan added that the aim is to make the report available online and the entire process as transparent as possible even though the unavailability of data from several sources takes away from the comprehensiveness of the exercise.
During 2014-15, the number of daily publications grew from 6,730 the previous year to 7,871 and their circulation went up from 26,42,89,811 copies to 29,63,02,606 copies per publishing day, an increase of 12.11%.
Periodicals, on the other hand, claimed a total circulation of only 21,32,45,547 copies per publishing day.
Jaitley attributed the disparity to a decline in magazine journalism. “Today, news has a maximum shelf life of a week. With the Internet, WhatsApp and countless other platforms, substitutes to traditional magazine journalism have been found,” he said.
During the year, 5,817 new publications were registered and 34 ceased publication. The highest number of publications were in Hindi, followed by English. A state-wise analysis shows that Uttar Pradesh, with 16,130 publications, is at the top spot, followed by Maharashtra with 14,394. Rs.
